Wonderful news: After 9 long months in 2 different detention centres, our 18 Vietnamese refugees in Indonesia have been flown to Jakarta where they are now living in community housing in Tangerang on the outskirts of the city: “Each family has their own room. We have freedom and are no longer in jail.” We are so happy and excited for them!
Their freedom, however, is strictly limited: They are not allowed to work and less than 10 percent of refugee children attend public school in Indonesia. Our immediate focus is to find a school which will accept the 12 children. Resettlement in a third country – the ultimate solution to their plight – could still be a long time away, although we are working on that too.
